Anyway, I've just started getting I to doom, and am looking for more bands to listen to. The problem is, most doom bands I've listened to I don't like, so it seems I have very specific tastes, but I have enjoyed the funeral doom bands I've heard. So does anyone have any funeral bands they'd recommend?

Just lots of inconsistencies with what he says and what he does. "It's shipping" and it still doesn't ship type shit.

I pulled this excerpt from reddit's r/metal and thought you may find it useful. Can't say I know much about funeral doom but if anything here's a jumping off point.

diSEMBOWELMENT - Transcendence into the Peripheral - considered the first "funeral doom" release, although it is more on the side of death/doom. It basically bridged the gap between the two and was foundational to funeral doom.

Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet - one of the archetypal funeral doom records. Heavy on the mourning and sorrowful atmosphere, augmented by heavy synth use.

Thergothon - Stream from the Heavens - another archetypal record that really established what funeral doom should sound like. Similar to Stormcrowfleet although lighter on the keyboards.

Mournful Congregation - Tears from a Grieving Heart - A sort of "middle ground" record that solidified funeral doom as a genre independent from death/doom and associated doom genres.

The newer standards:

Worship - Dooom - Not sure if this is their best one, but I like it a lot.

Loss - Despond - Many people have told me that this band belongs more to death/doom than funeral doom, but I'm still on the fence. There's very little death metal in here, but the riffs are strong and the depression is overpowering.

Bell Witch - Longing - Bass/drums only, although no less heavy. Much more minimalist than the previous recommendations. This band utilizes negative space better than almost anyone else.

Lycus - Tempest - A recent favorite, from 2013. Sort of harks back to Skepticism in the use of occasional cello and drone elements.

Not "essential" but still great listening:

Esoteric - discography - this band is often seen as a contemporary of Thergothon and Skepticism, but I have never found them to be quite on the same level. Still well worth it for people who have traversed the introductory mountain and are looking for more.

Ahab - The Divinity of the Oceans - this is one that people love to invoke as an archetypal funeral doom release, but I don't view it as any better than the 4 mentioned above. Funeral doom has a ton of overlap with death/doom, and I find Ahab to be more on the latter side due to their prevalent kick drumming and tempo. Still a very interesting release, and the title track is phenomenal.

Absum - Purgatoire - This one is a weirdo standout. They are associated with the Black Twilight Circle, who generally dabble in raw black metal. The funeral doom is a pretty big departure from their normal output, but this is a damn great release. It preserve the raw production that we ordinarily associate with BTC bands, but applies it to a long-form template with awesome results. Ventures a little bit onto the droning side, but is absolutely stellar nonetheless.

Aldebaran - Embracing the Lightless Depths - This is one of my favorite releases. It consists of two lengthy tracks with three interludes. Each of them is flawlessly executed, starting high and then plunging over the course of twenty minutes to subterranean depths. This one was actually put out via Profound Lore, rather than Parasitic Records (which is run by the drummer of this band, Tim Call, who also drums for Mournful Congregation now).

Ocean - Pantheon of the Lesser - To me, this is the crowning achievement of this genre. Nothing else is better. There are only two tracks here, and the first one "The Beacon" is one my all time favorites. It forgoes the ambient intro and instead open with a huge, drawling riff that doesn't let up for twenty minutes before relaxing into clean guitars and female vocals, with one of the greatest riffs I've ever heard coming in at the 19 minute mark. The second track is equally amazing, and while this is a pretty listener-unfriendly release, I highly recommend this to anyone that wants to hear what funeral doom is like at its best.

Even better - after 4 months of 'it's shipping and doesn't ship', he told me "here's your tracking number", so I go check and the tracking number is nonexistent. Also, through PMs, found out he sent this same apparently fake tracking number to at least one other forum member... I got my shit, and it works, and I like it, but just can't support this way of doing business. Anyway... I don't want to get into another sustained bitch-fest over this guy.

Listening to new Sunn... It moves at hyper speed for Sunn, so only like 10x slower than most bands. What are your guys' thoughts on it?

Also, how do I join FCOAW on facebook? Is it a hidden / invite only group or something? I can never find it searching. At least I've got rigs of doom/dad...

Um if Ocean count then Ocean every day forever. They were the raddest.

Haven't listened to the new Sunn record yet. I think the only album I listen to by them regularly is the audience bootleg that got turned into Domkirke (I assume the mastered the official release but I've never heard it).

i'm running out the door to work in a second here, so i can't type much, but the recommendations so far in this thread are great. I would definitely add Evoken and Nortt. two of my very favorites. mournful congregation as mentioned before is one of the best going right now as well. Asunder, from the bay area who are sadly broken up should be at the top of your list. stop whatever you're doing right now and go listen to them. their album "a clarion call" is just perfection. there's so much good shit mixed in with so much boring garbage. i'll try to check back in and some point when i'm not in so much of a hurry and my brain is hopefully working.
