I think we all agree here that the ideas should be informing the equipment, instead of vice versa, and if you've really got your own aesthetic/style it should be able to shine through regardless of the equipment you use (which is what people mean by 'tone is in the fingers').

I completely agree. I just don't see it coming through in the majority of modular twiddlery. It's prohibitive to personal expression because of the pseudo-scientific navel-examining nature of the technology. $3000 in gear, right, and it really doesn't matter if Fauntleroy McBeardo or his half-Japanese girlfriend are doing the twiddling; it sounds the same either way. It's pre-prepared. Get on a guitar and the person you are comes through regardless of your skill level. Dick around with a VCO and you are a VCO.

Like, I'm going through a lot of what you're talking about right now as my modular bits come together, but having some unified idea of what I want to do is keeping my music as uninteresting to the hot half Japanese girls as ever, modular or not.
