Nice score on that 800 man. A buddy of mine has a first run model that I think is his first and only amp through his whole musical career and it's a beast. I wish I hadn't sold my 50W version years ago, since they're so expensive now!

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
I know! Hell I saw a 50w version on shopgoodwill.com and it was beat as fuck and most likely didn't work, they couldn't test it, said no lights came on when they plugged it in. but it still went for 630.
I'm just thrilled to have gotten every amp that I wanted on my must have list. I have no hard gas for anything now. nothing where I want to drop some change like that on anything. I'm still looking but I only want the low low price deals.

Mine was one of the nicer older 50w versions that still had the original circuit or whatever, practically mint, sold it for $500 and it was up for sale for probably a month or two. Although I bought it for $400, so I wasn't really complaining at the time.

Sometimes that's how it goes. I figured I had to get an older JCM 800 since all my favorite tube amps are based on that circuit. Might as well have what all the others were going for or trying to improve upon.

I've had about 5 different amps (some more than once) that were basically that tone. I won't say the original 800 was necessary "the best", but it got the best tone the easiest. Some I had to twiddle knobs a lot and really dial it in, the Marshall you tuned it on and rocked.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Nice nice, I don't expect it to be the best persay. it's kinda like put to rest as in the back of my mind that there could possibly be better. I fully expect to like my peaveys and red bears more cause those I love.
also it negates any debates I've had with other people about similar circuit amps and they saying that nothing is as good as the og and then I can go... well I have one and I still like them more.
either way I'm looking forward to recording some osdm with it.

I hate trying to pick out speakers. There's nowhere to try out a variety in person with my own gear, I pretty much just have to buy something and hope I like it or can flip/trade it if I don't.

Seems like they're all meant to be as dirty as possible so you can get power tube saturation at low volume. Either that or there's way too many bells and whistles and the cleans don't sound that great. I'm the worst and deciding how to spend money though. In a perfect world I'd only use Mr. Grumpy into the Atlas 6x12 at full volume in all situations.
Ampeg gvt is good for quiet clean pedal platform if you can pick up the 15 watt version.
I think I checked that out a while back when I first started looking for something. Aren't they already discontinued though?
They are solid little beasts, not much gain to them at all, and likes pedals pretty well. They've been discontinued for a couple of years already, I think. And they switched production really soon after launch from Korea to China and there is all sorts of internet fuckery that says the MiC ones don't sound as good. I've not seen a 15w one for sale in a while (not that I've been looking), but the 5w ones pop up for good prices every now and again, so one may pop up.

Nice! Those had my interest when they came out, but then I never really heard anything about them. I'll be interested in your thoughts. I'm considering offloading my Earth in favor of something I can open up a bit more in the house - right now there is a Jet City 20 on craigsist that I may snag and get a few mods done. I had a 22h for like a year and I've missed the clean/od channel since I traded it away.

I'll definitely be posting about it and making clips, it's going to be my new home recording amp for making pedal demos and such. None of the big box stores carry Traynor, which is super weird to me as they make a lot of great gear and practically every little guitar shop carries them. There was a decent amount of demo videos online, not a lot, but I definitely had to hunt one down to actually buy.

I want to say Traynor has some kind of thing about avoiding GC and the like but that's an old, old memory of a bit of hearsay.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Anyone have any strong opinion on the Celestion Vintage 30 (the standard new ones you can buy anywhere, nothing special) vs the G123H30 Anniversary?
I'm updating my home recording guitar rig, just bought the Traynor Dark Horse 15 and now I'm onto new speaker(s). So this is only for home recording for my own music and pedal demos, not live. I've currently got a closed back 2x12 loaded with old UK made Celestion G12-65's and have had good results with that for a long time. At the very least I'm going to swap out one of the speakers for something complimentary and leave the other, though I may just get a new closed back 1x12 with a new speaker. I don't usually use very bright tones, I usually keep my Treble control on my amps around noon or barely higher and adjust on pedals as necessary. I'm always playing with dirt pedals, usually heavy fuzz (duh) or distortion and don't go for a very mid scooped tone ever. The kind of music I write and record by myself ranges from stoner rock, fuzzed out doom, grindcore to old school death metal. The V30 seems like a really safe bet, especially if I still have the 65 to fall back on. The Anniversary model seems a little more well rounded, which might be better by itself, but less useful paired with something dark, I go back and forth depending on the tone and style of any individual comparison I hear. I know if I just pick something I can probably make it work fine, just looking for some genre and tone specific feedback, since you guys are in the same realm.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
I didn't have mixed speakers in my first 412, but I started on G12H30s and ended on V30s. The G12s were a little too round sounding for my taste. V30s are like MIDS for your MIDS. If you run a scooped sound you still have MIDS. If you run a mid boosted sound you have a LOT of MIDS. No matter what, there's ALWAYS MIDS. Why do we need other frequencies when there are MIDS? Bassist? Fuck it, more MIDS. Take the cymbals out of your kit and add more toms. MIDS.
Seriously though, I prefer them a million times to the G12s, but mine are super worn in. I never had issues with that harsh ice pick sound that I always hear about, but I can't speak for brand new speakers either. My amps are being run darker than I used to, and they still sound nice and clear when played clean. I'm a little biased.
