Amen.
But also,
you and I should go in on a group order of the Power Action Go Unit thingo Darren is cooking up when it's ready.
Actually D, I had some questions about it, but I think they got lost in the general haze of this place.
1. When?
2. Does the phase cancellation effect work with solid states ok, or is more to do with tube power sections?
3. Will it be available in monochrome?
That is all.
But also,

Yeah I just checked the Electric Heat FB page for details. I definitely want in on an Aussie group buy. Maybe Sam will be in on it too.

Yeah he could've. I love Matt to death but he drives me nuts with his gear lust. He gets something new in and says its the best ever and then a week later he is talking about wanting something else. He doesn't sit down and go through an amp to really dig in and find out what all it can do. I'm sure the Mills would sound better with some tweaking and fucking around but I just can't get over how cheap it looks in person. Cheap wouldn't be the right word I guess. I just feel they focused more on looks than they did making sure it was road ready.
odontophobia wrote:That's a bummer. Early stages of the company, they'll do some learning and turn it all around some day I'm sure.
Yeah, I believe they'll be around for a while. From seeing their posts on Instagram they seem to be passionate about what they are doing. I can respect that.

I think the Atlas is $1,200 or something like that.

On the thread on FCoAW he said he runs the tubes at "low voltage" for longer tube life so there's essentially no freaking way he's getting anywhere close to that kind of power out of them. There are some threads on diyaudio about getting 200W from a pair of KT120s, but you've gotta run the screens around 600V and the plates around 800V. That's well into "No, seriously; this amp can kill your whole family" territory.
Plus the tubes are way too close together and way too close to the transformers. Toroids kick out enough heat on their own, and you can't expect that thin layer of plastic to behave the same as a giant mass of iron when it's 1/4" away from an insanely hot piece of glass. Factoring in the complexity of a "dual rail" power supply, the difficulty of driving these tubes, the cost/size of iron that can handle that kind of wattage even at 80 Hz, and the $1500 price point and it just doesn't add up.
I'd expect a clean 200-250W max at ~1kHz and I'd really be surprised if it can even do that much around 80 Hz. On the plus side that's only ~3dB shy of 400W so no one's going to notice.
KT120s and 150s are basically just upgraded KT88s, same maximum current from the cathode but beefed up plates. Just like any recent-production tube, the datasheets are nearly meaningless but these ones are especially bad. Good tubes for amps designed for KT88s, sure, but you're not going to double your power output without some serious design work.
tl;dr - no way.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
no that was a glorious read. I didn't think it all lined up right but between what you and Nick and that thread on FCoAW it just seemed like special magic and dreams that he selling his amps on. Even with the limited knowledge I have of the innerworkings and I thought it was all just very off.
I know someone else who got an Atlas Moth amp and is turning around immediately and getting rid of it. he got it for the design of the moth and some cash and he's probably only had it a month but was selling it 2 weeks after he got it. he said it's nice but not what he wanted.
I can only pretend to be smart
I'm not good at it.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
on a different note, and speaking of gear lust since I'm well versed with that.
I got a Novik MKE120 in.
I expected the tigher compression/ distortion like the Red Bear Mk120's have. but this a much different beast. much more wooly and loose in the end. Also considerably louder.

I'm both pleased with it but also disappointed since it wasn't exactly what I expected and was sorta lead to believe.

The AD200 I sold arrived safely to its destination. First time shipping a tube amp so I was a little worried with the outcome.
Now I need to find something on the cheap on CL to hold me over until my Mother is done.

1. When?
2. Does the phase cancellation effect work with solid states ok, or is more to do with tube power sections?
3. Will it be available in monochrome?
1. Soon. That is the best answer I've got at the moment.
2. All that stuff happens in the pedal so it should make no difference if the amp is tube or solid state beyond all amps sounding different from each other. It has worked great with the two solid staters and umpteen tubers that I've tried it with thus far.
3. You mean like the graphics printed on a silver aluminum box with no paint/powder coat? If so, then yes.

If you Aussie fellers want to go three (or more) at once I'd sure as shit cut some price for you!
Thanks for the continuing interest fellas. As I mentioned previously, that is what keeps me going
