The last thing I would do is design an amp around a tube only 1 manufacturer makes.
But wtf do I know.....

yeah...i think as a designer its cool...as someone who's buying it sucks...maintenance costs would be rediculous! Plus...i cant even imagine the weight of something like that...

You know that if you had to retube a 400W amp, the less you had to shell out the better.
But also, you know that the manufacturer can charge whatever the fuck they want when they're running the show on that tube
Could be cool, could also be a massive pain in the arse.
Weight is what the Doom Workout is for!

Fucking Marshall died on me tonight!
Probably a fuse as it just cut out...tried other power outlets and same deal.
Its rediculous...both amps i brought to Australia have got fucked up...im wondering if the power outlets are shit here or the power isnt stable...i dont get it...its pissing me right off!

Jiggled something loose in transport?
A fuse is usually a sign of something else.
Plus how old is that Marshall?

Might just need some loving.
Could be something simple.
The AOR blew up some Mullards when I first got it because a resistor in the bias circuit shit itself.
Worth getting looked over.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Power is a function of the particular tube, the primary impedance of the OT, OT power vs frequency (bandwidth), the plate voltage, the screen voltage, and in some respects the bias (but this is not the limiting factor or overall controlling factor).
The average 200W or 300W Hiwatt is producing 100W per pair of KT88 with 660-680V plate, 410-430V screens with the given primary impedance of the OT. So to add more wattage you could redesign the OT primary impedance and jack up the plate to 800V with more screen voltage to compensate (on paper this works out well). Assumes the OT bandwidth can account for the increase in power as well.
Also requires a stricter definition of power. Generally I am looking at low THD (low distortion) power at a decent bandwidth. So if the OT is rated for 100W at 30-18k Hz, that is a good bandwidth for 100W but if you want to increase the power likely it will shrink the bandwidth to compensate.

All I know is that peavey seems to have gotten it right with their heavy as balls CL400. I'd like to see nic build one of those, with the Dunwich eye for correcting shortcuts and overly conservative voltage levels. If you lived closer I'd totally donate mine for dissection and fine tuning.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
LOL! Nice one Harry. I will add another vote of confidence for the PV CLassic 400. I fall in love more with every practice and show. And another voice of dissent in regards to the KT120. The first time I heard of that tube was Ben V saying that they were shoddy and did not perform as advertised.
And I know this is the doom room and the band I'm about to mention is not doomy a bit but for FUCK'S SAKE if A Place To Bury Strangers gets anywhere near you you NEED to see them. My first time seeing them live was SUnday night and I just can't get over it. They were amazing and louder than your friendly neighborhood militarized police force's LRAD.

Harry hit it on the head lol.
odontophobia yea it was brought up when I was post about Mills again. it was the weight that nick immediately caught cause it's less than many 100w tubers.

I wish I could get more into APTBS. Maybe I should check 'em out in person, but their records, while sounding great, don't do much for me.
